It was at a city council meeting last year that the time of Turlock Police Chief Hampton's time of leaving us arrived and I expected to see the announcement of the appointment of his successor... the choice seemed obvious, promote from within the organization, experience, knowledge, ability... Rob Jackson. Just announce it!

Little did I know.

Weeks and weeks had to pass without an official Chief at the helm. They felt the need to go outside our police organization, outside our county, even outside the state on a hunt for someone who didn't know our community as well as our own people did. The city council voted to spend tens of thousands of dollars on an outside agency to conduct the manhunt for the best candidate. After all the delay, all the effort, all the money spent in a time of fiscal difficulty they did find the best person for the job and announced his appointment... congratulations Turlock Police Chief Rob Jackson.

As I recall, there was one vote on the council that night last year against spending all that cash instead of staying in house for the selection process... fiscal responsibility in tough times or good times should always be respected.
