The vast majority of our county’s panhandlers fall into one or more of three categories – drug and/or alcohol addicted and/or the mentally ill.

Many will tell you they will only use the money for food, when in fact, in nearly all cases this not true at all. They will use the money collected from you and others to purchase alcohol and/or drugs.

Therefore, in most instances, when you give these individuals money, you are in effect spending your hard-earned wages to support an underground drug cartel. Organized crime fueled by meth and heroin addictions supported by your well-meaning generosity.

So the next time a panhandler approaches you for a cash contribution, please remember that there are other ways to help which will not only benefit them, but will benefit all of us by reducing the amount of money which supports the local underground drug trade.

For more information about alternatives to giving cash contributions to panhandlers, please contact the Stanislaus County United Way at (209) 523-4562

I agree Robert, some panhandlers are thieves also. Igave a panhandler $35 because he said he needed t get an alternator for his car which he said was his home. That was across town at the AM-PM, what he did not know was two hours later I would be in Ceres, at that time I was using cveron as the chioce of gasoline and I was in Ceres, so I pulled into to get gas, and there across the parking lot was the same guy making the same pitch to another possible sucker. And his car was right there. I told the person who he was begging that I had just given the guy money to buy an aternator, the man left I then demanded to see the guys alternator, he wouldn't show me and sped off........donate to a charity and be a fool like I was, though occasionally I will donate to those I feel will spend it right.

Cali, you know what everyone says. If you want to know what's going on in Turlock, you read the Modesto Bee.

Maybe they'd be more inclined to follow up on this?

What is socialism?

MartinezRussell commented on Thursday, Oct 01, 2009 at 01:54 AM

1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.

2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.

3. No animal shall wear clothes.

4. No animal shall sleep in a bed. (with sheets)

5. No animal shall drink alcohol. (to excess)

6. No animal shall kill any other animal. (without cause)

7. All animals are equal. (but some animals are more equal than others)

Why is a Modesto candidate posting a blog on the Turlock Journal site?

Rawlins commented on Tuesday, Oct 06, 2009 at 19:19 PM

Don't know why he posted here but I'd still like to see the drug addicts kicked from the parks.

Not only drugs and alcohol but gambling.

Come on Journal staff. Are you going to let this site become a spammer haven? Maybe you should find a moderator to get rid of this stuff. Delete this goldcoins advert.

Yes that is what socialism is! Read the dictionary.

And it's a total embarrassment that these people choose drugs and others give them excuses for it. It's time these losers start taking personal responsibility and stop blaiming "society". Such a BS cop out.

MartinezRussell commented on Saturday, Oct 24, 2009 at 22:27 PM

Anyone with common sense knows this new breed of scum that hang out in the parks are drug addicts. When they are not sleeping or using drugs, they are in your neighborhood looking to burglarize your home or vehicle in order to get more money for more drugs. Yet the police and the city allow them to be publicly intoxicated, loiter and panhandle (all of which are illegal). We need to run these people off and stop coddling them.

Anyone who disagrees is welcome to invite this riff-raff to live at your house.

I suggest that anyone living within a short distance of downtown shred all their documents before throwing them out. These are the people that dig through your trash looking for information they can use for identity theft.

My neighbor tried to be a nice guy and hire these "homeless" to do some work around his house. The tweakers came back one morning after he left for work. His wife was gone briefly taking their daughter to school. They rode up on bikes, walked in the front door, stole her jewelry and disappeared. In the end, it turns out the husband had paid them to case the house without knowing it.

Do not give anything to these people! Let them go elsewhere for their scams.

There are some out here that are really hunger. While I do not make it a habit to give them money, I have on occaision bought them food. I have offered to get them something to eat. Some take me up on it, others don't, problem solved.

I will only give money if they are sober and only one dollar. One day I did this and I told the kids that he will probably go buy alcohol. We were in a parking lot with a McDonalds. To our surprise we watched him walk into McDonalds and sit down with the food.

As we left the parking lot, the kids faces were filled with grins.

If I drove by the park and saw all of these addicts being handcuffed and taken away, the faces of my wife and I would be filled with grins.

This guy was not drunk or on drugs. He was an older gentleman who was fairly well kept. He was just hungry. If he looked like a drug using, alchoholic I wouldn't have given him squat. He was embarrassed asking for money.
In this county there are a lot of families out on the street. Maybe if our officials took more interest in these people we wouldn't have the problems we have.
